CowParade is the world’s largest and most successful public art exhibition, having taken place in over 70 cities globally since it started in 1999. It brings life-size fibre-glass reinforced cows to the streets of a host region, where decorated by local artists they are placed on display for public viewing over several months. A charity auction at the end of the event raises money for selected charity partners with over £12 million raised to date. The quirky nature of CowParade guarantees huge levels of media exposure. It is estimated that more than 100 million people around the world have seen the cows and over 5,000 artists have participated. This is the first time CowParade has come to Northern Ireland.

CowParade will be officially launched at the Balmoral Show on 18 May 2012 and the cows will be in place in Derry from June through to August/September with events as part of the Irish Walled Town Weekend celebrations. The charity auction will follow in the Autumn.

How can local communities get involved?
The ‘Cow-Moonity’ Programme provides an opportunity for community and voluntary groups across Derry to submit design concepts for the decoration of cows. Each city will choose 10 designs to be developed and painted by an assigned artist working in a public painting space within the community. Participating community groups will have their name included on a plaque along with the artist’s name on the cow as well as in official CowParade marketing materials and maps. We are looking for unique and creative Cow designs that visually reflect the vibrancy and culture of communities and that are authentic and unique to the city and our people. The deadline for submissions to the Cow-Moonity Design Competition is Friday 2nd March 2012 with winners announced on Monday 12th March 2012. Further information can be found at: www.cowparadeni.com
